Food For Everyone: Raising Youth: Growing Food, Justice, and Leadership in Your Classroom

During the summer of 2010 CAUSE began recruiting and organizing high school youth to become active in their community. At Hueneme High School organizers worked with students during lunch and after school meetings and were able to identify ways to reduce solid waste and decrease energy use to improve overall student environmental health and wellbeing. From the analysis of trash, students also found that a lot of food was being thrown out and attributed it to poor taste and unhealthy lunches.

To further the issue of unhealthy school lunches, students leaders in conjunction with parent groups Voz Hueneme at Hueneme High School and Vecinos Unidos in Santa Paula, conducted a survey that found the vast majority of students don’t like the school lunches and think that they are unhealthy. This has galvanized the youth to address school lunch and health issues district wide.

CAUSE 2011 summer youth interns were able to mobilize hundreds of youth and parents from South Oxnard and Santa Paula to attend school board meetings and the Raising Healthy Kids and Healthy Communities Action Forum in support of healthier school lunches. CAUSE continues to develop the leadership of youth to advocate for policies that promote healthier school meals through their school clubs.
