Building Progressive Voter Power

img
In Santa Maria, Ventura and Santa Barbara, CAUSE is working to improve voting rights and accountability in local government to ensure representation for the growing diversity of the Central Coast.
CAUSE advocated for a city council district map in Santa Barbara that would protect the voice of underrepresented residents including Latinos, young people, working-class families, public transit users and renters. Now the next step is moving to even-year elections to increase diverse voter participation!
Knowing the high stakes in this election, CAUSE led a massive effort in 2016 to mobilize Latino, young and working-class voters throughout the Central Coast region.
An op-ed reflecting on the gains of the 2012 election written by CAUSE Executive Director Marcos Vargas was published in the Ventura County Star. Marcos notes that Prop 30 was a major turning point in California and credits the stunning leadership and engagement of youth and Latinos. This election truly showed that the power of grassroots organizing can overcome the power of money.
