Joana Barrera
Santa Maria Organizer

Joana was born and raised in Santa Maria, CA, where her family settled after having moved from Mexico City, Mexico. 

In high school, Joana was actively involved in AVID, the Mock Trial club, the California Scholarship Federation, the school newspaper, and AP Promoters. She is part of an annual college/career fair at her former high school for high school students to learn about different careers. 

Joana went on to be the first in her family to attend and graduate from a 4-year university. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of California in Santa Barbara, CA.

During her time at UCSB, Joana participated in CALPIRG, an on-campus non-profit organization that runs various social justice campaigns. She also ran for the University-Owned Housing student senator position on Associated Students at UCSB, while working at the on-campus post office.

After graduating, Joana had the opportunity to work in Guadalupe, CA on Joan Hartmann’s campaign for Santa Barbara County Supervisor. Joana now continues her work as a community organizer for youth and adults with CAUSE in Santa Maria, CA.
