When Santa Maria faced a decision on whether to construct a federal immigrant detention center, there was a historic grassroots opposition movement from the city's immigrant community. Thousands of community members turned out to city council and planning commission meetings to oppose the ICE facility, astonishing city officials and news media.
In Santa Maria, Ventura and Santa Barbara, CAUSE is working to improve voting rights and accountability in local government to ensure representation for the growing diversity of the Central Coast.
The Santa Maria Chapter of CAUSE (at the time known as PUEBLO) won a major victory in 2012 to fight off the placement of a hazardous metal scrapyard in the middle of a low-income Latino neighborhood.
Over 500 people marched for immigrants’ rights across the Central Coast on May 1st, calling on Congress to create a roadmap to citizenship for the 110,000 undocumented immigrants in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties who aspire to become citizens.
