Olga Santos
Community Organizer: Santa Maria

Olga Santos moved to Santa Maria as a child and worked in the fields picking strawberries, zucchini, green beans, cucumbers, and onions as her family of farmworkers moved from living in the streets, to a van, to a garage, to a room, to an apartment, to a house.  Her first language was Mixteco (an indigenous language from Mexico) and growing up she learned both Spanish and English and is now a trilingual interpreter and a licensed trainer.  The discrimination, hardship and mistreatment she and her family experienced in the fields and in her community motivated her to get involved as a volunteer in her community, continue her education, and work for change.  Olga is the first in her family to attend college.  She began her professional career in community work with California Rural Legal Assistance (CRLA) in Santa Maria.  She has been the Santa Maria Organizer at CAUSE since August 2015.  She is passionate about fighting the injustices faced by farmworkers and breaking down the language, educational and cultural barriers faced by the indigenous community.  She has two children and works to teach them that anything is possible.
