Our Work

For generations, all of Ventura County’s power plants have been concentrated in Oxnard. For decades, energy needs for the region stretching from Simi Valley to Santa Barbara have been met by making the same decision over and over: building large fossil fuel power plants in Oxnard, the largest community of color in the region.

The Thomas Fire that struck Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties in December of 2017 was at the time the largest wildfire in California history, and was followed by a deadly mudslide when rains washed down the burnt hillsides.

After many years of engaging farmworkers in the Central Coast and hearing the stories of extreme overwork, wage theft, and health and safety risks, in 2015 CAUSE surveyed 600 local farmworkers about labor conditions in the fields of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties.
