ABOUT THE VENTURA COUNTY HOUSING COALITION:

The Ventura County Housing Coalition (VCHC) is an alliance between community-based organizations that support housing justice and nonprofit affordable housing developers to advocate for policy solutions to our housing crisis and increase the availability of affordable housing in Ventura County.  The coalition works to advance local policies that support the zoning and permitting of affordable housing as well as provide funding to build and preserve affordable housing in the county.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

CAUSE is currently seeking a temporary part-time Ventura County Housing Coalition Coordinator responsible for facilitating coalition meetings and executing coalition advocacy efforts.  The Coalition Coordinator will recruit and retain coalition members, engage local organizations and residents in housing advocacy campaigns, work with stakeholders to develop policy solutions at the local level, meet with government policymakers to advocate for affordable housing solutions, and develop and communicate messages in digital and traditional media to support affordable housing.  The Coalition Coordinator will have the option to work remotely from home or in one of CAUSE’s offices in Oxnard, Ventura, or Santa Paula, with some in-person meetings with community members required.  The Coalition Coordinator will be supervised by a Senior Policy Advocate at CAUSE and be accountable to direction from the Steering Committee of the Ventura County Housing Coalition.

The Coalition Coordinator position responsibilities include, and are not limited to:

  • Facilitating monthly Ventura County Housing Coalition (VCHC) general membership meetings, as well as biweekly steering committee meetings
  • Engaging coalition member organizations in VCHC advocacy activities and campaign actions, including meeting with policymakers and grassroots organizing of impacted residents
  • Meeting with elected officials, government agency staff, community-based organizations, industry representatives, and other stakeholders on behalf of the coalition
  • Organizing in-person activities such as a countywide housing advocacy summit to engage local residents interested in supporting housing solutions
  • Building the visibility and presence of the coalition in the local community through public presentations, traditional and digital media communications
  • Developing coalition workplans and driving forward priorities to meet campaign timelines
  • Maintaining notes and coalition documents and assisting the CAUSE team with grant reporting for coalition funding

JOB REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent required
  • 2+ years of experience in community organizing and/or policy advocacy around social, economic, and environmental justice issues
  • Experience managing or facilitating coalitions preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment and passion for social, economic and/or environmental justice
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills including large-group public speaking and formal writing for publication
  • Experience with using Microsoft Office computer programs (Word, Powerpoint, and Excel) as well as web-based Google applications (Gmail, Google Docs)
  • Experience with and desire to work with diverse cultures and the ability to engage people from a variety of backgrounds
  • Ability to interact professionally with elected officials, donors, board members, leaders of ally organizations, and news reporters
  • Strategic and analytical approach to political issues
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Able to set own work priorities, manage responsibilities and time
  • Flexibility and willingness to sometimes attend evening and weekend events/meetings, and be able to travel throughout region

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Valid drivers’ license and dependable access to a car to drive for work required.

WORK SCHEDULE

This position is part-time at 20 hours per week.  Work can be done remotely or based out of one of CAUSE’s offices in Oxnard, Ventura, or Santa Paula, however some in-person meetings and events throughout Ventura County will be required.  This position is temporary for a project currently funded through the end of 2024.  We will seek opportunities for continued employment beyond that date.

COMPENSATION

Hourly pay for this position will range from $33-$38 per hour depending on experience.
