Civic Engagement Manager                           



Founded in 2001, CAUSE's mission is to build grassroots power to advance social, economic and environmental justice for the people of the Ventura and Santa Barbara counties region through policy research, leadership development, organizing, and advocacy.


CAUSE is currently seeking an Civic Engagement Manager (CEM) to develop and manage our voter outreach strategy for year round voter engagement. At least twice each year, the CEM will supervise, manage and train a paid Civic Engagement Team who will be making calls and going door to door to educate voters on different issues. The CEM will also be the lead in our participation in statewide voter engagement coalitions including California Calls and CEJA. In addition the CEM will be responsible for coordinating programs with our sister 501C(4) organization CAUSE Action Fund including its Justice Leadership Institute that recruits and trains people interested in running for local office. This position is a full time position. The Position will initially report to the Operations Director and will largely work out of CAUSE’s Oxnard office.

The Civic Engagement Manager responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Hire, train and supervise a paid team of phone and door to door canvassers twice a year

  • Attend regular statewide California Calls and field team meetings representing CAUSE

  • Participate in weekly city-based team meetings as appropriate

  • Represent the organization in regional and/or statewide voting tables

  • Participating in some grassroots fundraising, grant writing and reporting

  • Coordinate the work of our sister 501c4 organization CAUSE Action Fund  

  • Support the development of a Central Coast Civic Engagement Table coalition effort among local organizations

  • Support Justice Leadership Institute candidate training program

  • Training staff and compliance on c3/c4 election and campaign finance laws

  • Working with financial admin on campaign finance reporting

  • PDI management of voter data and setting up campaigns

Job Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred but not required

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent required

  • At least 3 cycles of field campaign experience working to engage voters

  • Experience with and desire to work with diverse cultures and the ability to engage people from a variety of backgrounds

  • Able to work independently and as part of a team

  • Able to set own work priorities, manage responsibilities and time

  • Flexibility and willingness to sometimes work long hours and weekends, and be able to travel throughout region, state and nation.

  • Be able to develop trainings and materials.

  • Be able to read spreadsheets to track numerical goals and identify where further training is needed.

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills. 

  • Be able to clearly articulate our organizing and campaign goals to voters in an inspiring way.

  • Be able to listen for cues from voters - what moves them, what do they care about, etc. and direct the conversation toward them taking local action.

  • Be able to connect with various audiences and build connections/relationships.

  • Must be able to record voter responses, notes, schedules on our voter outreach platforms.

Valid drivers’ license and dependable access to a car to drive for work required.


This is a full-time exempt position.  This position has flexible hours and may often include evening and weekend work.  CAUSE has a hybrid remote/office work arrangement (3 days in office, 2 from home).


Starting pay for this full-time position is $66,560. Benefits include 100% paid medical and dental coverage including dependents, paid sick and mental health days, holidays and flexible paid vacation days in addition to typically two week paid annual holiday shutdown, annual retirement contribution, monthly stipend for use of cellphone and travel, and professional development opportunities.  To ensure pay equity across our team, salaries at CAUSE follow a formula based on position and tenure and are non-negotiable for individual candidates.  However, we have a fixed salary scale providing additional pay for candidates with years of relevant job experience significantly beyond the minimum qualifications listed in this job description.
