Lompoc is one of the largest and most racially diverse cities in Santa Barbara County. The city and its residents have long been shaped by the agricultural and military industries, with many community members working in the fields and related sectors. The presence of Vandenberg Space Force Base and Federal Correctional Institution, has also played a central role in the local economy, contributing to the city’s identity through farming, the military, and the prison system. Lompoc’s agricultural industry, from cut flowers to vegetables to wine grapes, has historically attracted generations of immigrant families to the region, and today the city’s population of roughly 45,000 residents is majority Latino. Housing has become increasingly unaffordable and unstable, as Lompoc is a predominantly renter community and many working-class families displaced by gentrification in South Santa Barbara County have relocated there. At the same time, local grassroots leaders see growing opportunities for people power, economic opportunity, and environmental justice across the city. Residents are planting the organizing seeds to address economic inequality and advocate for greater investments in education, transportation, healthcare, and youth services. As a major hub of California’s agricultural production and aerospace industry, Lompoc remains at the center of ongoing struggles for farmworker rights, environmental justice, and housing justice.
